Historias en Kilometros is a community-based filmmaking lab project with an audiovisual distance-learning initiative for the Colombian communities to tell their stories, and become filmmaking allies in creating professional-grade community films. Since 2023, it has gained an international scope. HEK's goal is to create an international network of community filmmakers to connect local communities with expert trainers and help them to better tell their stories. The training process is completely free and local communities do not need to have professional experience or equipment.
HEK works on connecting with communities, listening to what they have to say, understanding their needs in order to create a training plan that helps them put their stories on film. They provide training, production and dissemination of community film materials. HEK has ten employees who are divided into three teams dealing with: production, communication, and training. Also, HEK has sixteen local teams and approximately 100 trainers from around the world and they focus on three local teams per year.
